I’ve been prompted with an update notification on my windows 8.1. But when I tried to update, it was showing me the windowsupdate_80240016 error. I’ve tried updating it again, but it didn’t stop giving that error message. Please help me fix this problem?

There are several solutions to this problem –

• First, check if any other updates are showing this error or not.

• If it doesn’t show any error, restart your PC to a clean boot state and try installing this update.

• If none of that worked, open troubleshooting menu and run it to fix the problem automatically.

• If it didn’t find any problems, try installing the update manually by going to the official site of Microsoft.

• If not, download the most recent servicing stack update from the Microsoft site and restart your PC. Now try updating your PC.

• Other than this, you can try contacting Microsoft customer care.

When you try to install a Windows Update, you may receive error code “0x80240016” when the Windows Update client cannot access the user token. To fix the problem, try to stop and restart the Windows Update service. Press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” then hit Enter.

In the command prompt window, type the following commands then hit Enter after each command:

net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

When you are finished, close the command prompt window then try installing the Windows Update again. If this doesn’t work, try renaming the “Download” folder inside the “SoftwareDistribution” folder. Repeat the same steps to open the command prompt. In the command prompt window, type the following commands then hit Enter after every command:

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution
ren Download Download.old
net start wuauserv

After this, install the Windows Update again and see if it works.
