Hello Good Day,

You can't open a DBF file directly using MS Office 2010 (Word/Excel/PPT). You need you convert in to an excel file. There are software's that allows you con convert DBF files to excel files.

You can download DBF to Excel converter software here:

Hope it helps.

Microsoft Office wont recognize DBF file formats. But there are other applications mainly built to view and edit DBF files. One of these program is DBF viewer 2000, you can downloads it from this site : http://www.dbf2002.com/

It is easier to use than to convert your DBFfiles to be recognize by Microsoft Office.Using this application you can directly view and edit your DBFfiles without converting it.

Hope this helps you.

Hi ,

To open a DBF in office 2010 follow these steps :

Reinstall office 2010 Click on file and choose "open with" Select"default program" and brows to C:/program Files then browse Microsoft office and Finally browse to excel.

You can also use the DBF Viewer And Editor if you want more than opening a DBF (view, edit and print)

The DBF file is a dBase file and its letters stands for DataBase File. It is a file format basically used by database software. This file format was originally used by dBase II and continued until dBase IV and originated from Ashton-Tate but can also be accessed by FoxPro, xBase, Act!, Arago, Wordtech, Clipper, and similar database or database-related products.

This file format can also be accessed by Microsoft Office Excel and Microsoft Office Access. So, since you have Microsoft Office 2010, just fire up either Office Excel or Office Access and load the DBF file. It’s quite confusing seeing the posts above saying a DBF file can’t be opened by Microsoft Office Excel.

I tried doing it myself to verify if Office Excel can really open a DBF file. I downloaded a ZIP file from DBF File Format that contains a DBF file. I tried viewing the file with Servant Salamander to verify if it’s in binary format or text format and I learned that it is in binary format. I started Office Excel and loaded the file.

And guess what? The file opened. So, if you are confused, use Office Excel or Office Access to open the DBF file.
