Hi,

I got an email from a friend. It contained a song that had been modified on Audacity and exported as MP3. On receiving the email I downloaded it but it had no extension. On properties it only said 'File Type: File'. Now I can't open it even by selecting programs from the list of programs. How can I get the video to After Effects?

How to import files with no extension

Considering the exported file was an MP3, even though it has no extension, it still is assumable that the file is indeed an MP3. However, if the extension is not provided, the program you use to open the file with, will not recognize it as such.

The best course of action in this case is to manually change the file extension. If you have the option to see the file extension, all you have to do is to add .mp3 to the file name. If you know the file extension to be any other (m4a, mpg, etc), just change accordingly.

If not, you will have to have your system show file extensions. Here's an example of how to do it in Windows 7:

1. Go to 'My Computer'. You can also go to where the document is located.

2. Go to 'Organize' located in the upper left side and choose 'Folder and search options'.

3. Uncheck where it says 'Hide extensions for known file types'.

4. Press OK.

5. You can now manually change the file extension to the correct one.
