How to fix Microsoft Update Error

I am trying to find an update from Microsoft Update web site when I got this error 0x80072efd. My operating system is Windows XP. The description in the error box says, My connection with the server could not be established. I tried resetting my modem and restart my computer, but it has no use.

How can I fix this error and what is causing this to occur? Please help.

How to fix Microsoft Update Error

This error may occur if you use Windows Update. And the result of the Windows for not being able to connect correctly to the server which will host the downloadable files that your computer will have.

Causes:

• Applications that are open and may interfere with your Internet Communications.
• Internet Connection is damaged or corrupted.
• Problem with your PC settings and options.
• You have a high usage of your Internet.
• Database Errors.
• Your firewall is blocking your connection.

To fix this:

Step 1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.

• Click Start.
• Open your browser.
• Type speedtest.net on the URL box.
• Test your Internet speed.

If the page will open then you are connected. Otherwise, contact your ISP.

Step 2. Check your Firewall Settings

• Right-click Firewall icon.
• Select Open.
• Browse the settings.
• Click Exceptions.
• Place the following websites on the exceptions list:

• http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

• http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5Step

3. Temporarily disable your anti virus software.

How to fix Microsoft Update Error

These errors may occur due to following reasons:

• There may Applications or processes  running that are interfering with Internet communications.
• There may be  Resource issues on your computer.
• High Internet activity.
• Presence of Recoverable database errors.

If you  have allowed Windows Automatic Updates to install updates automatically.  During its 24-hour time cycle, and the error message still shown,  than use the  following methods:

• Verify Internet connectivity.
• Make sure that Windows Firewall is turned on, and temporarily disable third-party firewalls.
• Temporarily disable third-party Antivirus software.
• Disable software accelerator programs.
• Add the Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site to the Trusted Sites list.
