How to edit pictures in Adobe Photoshop like a professional?

Okay, digital photography is now a trend these days. However, I don't have a DSLR or can't afford to buy one. My only option is that to edit pictures properly to make my photo look like it was taken from a DSLR or any other very expensive camera. Here are my questions:

  1. What should i do prior to taking pictures?
  2. After taking pictures, what should be done first in Photoshop?
  3. What other tips or effects can you suggest in using editing photos?

That is all my questions for now, thanks for reading this and hoping someone could help me. Have a nice day!

Hi steve!

So you also have a passion for photography. I absolutely understand your situation so I am so glad that i can help you. First thing first, you should have a Photoshop already installed in your PC.

My answer to your 1st question is that you should always follow the "rule of thirds". Imagine your image to be divided into two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical line thus dividing the picture into 9 equal parts.

Therefore, in these 4 lines (2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines) there are 4 intersecting points in which it is where you should place your subject. (see attached file for the example).

For your second questions, what I often do first in Photoshop is to adjust the levels of your image. You can locate the level option here: (Image > Adjustments > Levels) or use the shortcut (ctrl + L). Try aligning the Black pointer slider to the base of the "mountain shaped" histogram and do likewise in the white pointer slider.

And lastly for the 3rd question, duplicate your layer by selecting your selection layer then press (ctrl J). Then go to (Image > Adjustments > Channel mixer) then check the box in monochrome. This will make your duplicate layer in black and white. Now, Select your duplicate layer and change the Blending options to overlay and change the opacity to your liking.

Hope that these could solve your problem.

I agree, photography is now a trend these days, so without further delay, here are my solutions:

1. Before taking a picture, be sure you are equally exposed (not so dark/bright). This can really help during editing pictures.

2. Make sure adjust the tone, color and contrast. You can do this automatically by clicking it in: Image > auto tone, auto color, auto contrast.

3. Be sure to get rid of distracting or unwanted objects in your pictures like red-eye, pimples, scars. You can fix this by using the red-eye tool and the Healing brush tool.

There you go, hope this can help you.

No problem. You could find many tricks and tutorials all over the net. But it is more helpful to raise your specific questions in a site like this so your problem would be individually answered. Cheers!
