How to create a local server on window 8

I am using window 8, and for my college project I need to create a server on localhost which will be accessed over a LAN. After searching for two hours I didn’t find a solution to my problem. Please guide me in hosting a local server for window 7.
Also recommend me any open source software for this, if available.

Hi sameul , the fact is there are many software for web servers .

The most popular ones are xamp, lamp ,apache2 etc. You can start the xamp that's pretty much easy. With these software the other important things such as php5 , mysql database will automatically be installed with it.
