How can we secure our network?

We have a Belkin router with a wireless capability. We did not set any password on it, so anybody in the family could easily connect. 

Just recently, the speed has dropped down and pages load forever. Would a secured wireless network fix the problem? How can we secure our network?

The question you have asked is about securing your WiFi network. As you mentioned that your speed has dropped and pages don’t load on your web browser, it is certain that without a password protected secured network, everybody can have an access to your wireless network.
 
The more the users, the lesser the speed would be. I would suggest you to set a generic password on your wireless network. Make that general password, known to everybody in the family, so that they would not have to face a problem while connecting to the network.
 
By securing your network, your speed would also improve, as there will be lesser users.

I have read about your problem on slow network connection, in your house because of several users and you are concerned if a secured wireless network will fix your problem.
 
Well, definitely YES. To prevent others from accessing your wireless internet connection, just simply secure your network by changing the default password of the router into a more secure one.
 
First, open the router's settings page; then go to your web browser and enter your correct user name and password for the router. Once you have logged into your router, you may change your default password into a more secure one.
 
In this way your internet connection will be faster. Hope this solution of mine will help your problem.

As you have mentioned, you did not set any password on your router. I would suggest that you better set a secure password in your wireless network. Make your password is known to your family, so they can still access or connect to the network.
 
Use a password that is hard to guess. For example, a password that contains both upper and lowercase letters, as well as numbers. The longer the password, the better. By doings this, it will help you prevent others from accessing your wireless network connection. As a result, your network speed will also become faster.

Hi Pearly,

If wireless network is unsecured, this enabled WiFi riders connects to your wireless networks and get Internet access for free. They also use your Wireless Internet connection bandwidth and this caused your Internet speed to slow down and sometimes intermittent.

To enable Belkin Wireless networks, these are the steps to follow;

* Open Internet Explorer; enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

* Enter admin in the username and blank for password.

* Go to navigation column, and click Channel and SSID.

* You may set your own SSID and save the settings.

* Click on Wireless Security tab to secure your wireless network.

* It opens Belkin Wireless Security tab.

* For WEP with 64/128 bit compatible.

* WEP consist of either 5 or 10 or 13 or 26 characters as network key, 0-9 numbers and A-F letters.
