I'm new to Mac OS and I would like to erase files from my USB external HDD.  I have a 13" Retina Display MacBook Pro with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5, OS X Mountain Lion and an ASUS 1 TB external HDD.  How can I secure erase USB files Mac OS Mountain Lion?

  1. Open the “Disk Utility” Application. (Found in /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility).
  2. Select the USB stick in the left hand menu that you wish to erase.
  3. Click the “Security Options” button.
  4. Move the slider to “Most Secure”.
  5. Click “OK”.
  6. Click the “Erase…” button.
  7. Click the “Erase” button to confirm.Follow these steps to erase a Mac USB

Hello John,

 

There are few way you can do secure erasing;
 
First you have to boot into recovery mode. During the boot please press command and r keys. Now you have to open Disk Utility and do the necessary erasing you want to do. When done, download or I should say choose to download Mountain Lion.
