You didn't provide information about error your friend have. Ubuntu can open all files which can be opened on Windows machines. I think you have error that Ubuntu can't find proper application for opening your file. So I advise you to check which file extension your friend is trying to open, then use google and find application which can open that file on Ubuntu.
