Hi Mark

Usually the data will be backed up in a device such as a hard disk, optical disk or magnetic tape. Whether if it can be retrieved after a catastrophe is a question of how it is backed up. If it is backed in real time the backed up device has a chance to be near the original database, in a case of a physical accident such as a fire or lightning strike or damage due to violence, it too will be destroyed with the original hardware resulting in the backup plan failing. So it is a better idea to back the data in batches and store it somewhere safe. The downside of this is when data loss occurs the most recent data that was not backed up will be lost .

If your computer suddenly broke but the hard drive seems fine then there should be no problem. As long as the hard drive is intact and nothing bad happens to it, you can always get your files. In order to get or recover your files from your computer, you need to remove the hard drive and connect it to another working computer.

From there, you can explore the contents of your drive and copy your files to another drive like in a USB flash drive or copy the files temporarily on that computer until your computer is fixed. Once your computer is fixed and is back to working condition, split your hard drive into two partitions (2).

The first partition is for the operating system or where Microsoft Windows will be installed and the second partition is for your data files. In the future, every document that you’ll be working on should be saved on that second partition or the data drive.

This way when something bad happens to your computer and you need to reinstall the operating system, your data files will be safe in the second partition when you format the first partition or the system drive.
