Help me please. When I play anything using windows media player I get the following error.

"Windows media player cannot play the file …"

Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the  player.

This problem doesn’t mean that the file you are trying to open is not supported by the media player or by Windows Media Player. There are times that a file cannot be opened even if it is really supported because the file’s extension name is different from the supposed video format it contains. Which basically means that the file was only renamed from its original format to a new file name that is somehow giving problems to media players opening the file.

In your case, I think you are trying to play a .wmv file which is obviously supported by the media player. Try playing other files since the folder contains several .wmv files so you can verify if not a single file can be opened. If still can’t, try opening other file formats like .mpg, .avi, or .mpeg. If you are successful in opening one of these formats, try converting the .wmv files to a different format like the one you previously opened.

Hi Joseph,

There are many reasons for this type problem. Some reason I mention for your help

1. The error usually occurred when windows media player can't recognize the file which you want to open. File requires a playback filter or code.

2. When the windows media player doesn't support the file format.

3. It may be in the license file. You can try by restoring the license file.

4. It can be for a hardware problem of your computer. The hard disk might be damaged.

5. The file can be protected , you should download the license and try again.

6. You can check audio CODEC which might be not installed. CODEC error answer

7. You should check your troubleshooting problem. Troubleshooting problem.

I think it will be helpful for you.
