Test your external hard disk with SeaTools. It will scan your hard disk for possible driver corruption, damaged master boot records, viruses and spyware or hardware conflicts. Download and install it on your Windows PC and then run the test.

If it passes all the SeaTools test, and you are still experiencing issues, run Disk Error Checking on Windows. Double-click My Computer and right-click on your hard disk drive. Click Properties and under the Tools tab, click Check Now. Under the Check Disk dialog, tick the Automatically Fix File System Errors check box. And then click Scan For and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors check box. Click Start. If none will fix the problem, maybe you need to replace it with a new one.

You can solve your problem by following one of these steps:

  • Check your device drivers if they are up to date.
  • Check your drive on another computer.
  • Check for any updates you make earlier to your drive and try to recover them.
  • If drive is new, then check if you have used the proper way to unplug it.
  • Whenever you unplug a drive which is plug and then play, you have to use the safety remove hardware option.
  • Make a full scan of your drive and make it error free.
  • Make sure your drive is not suffering from some physical threads.

I hope after you go through these steps your drive will be functional.
