Error 1017: Insufficient Permission in creating backup with Retrospect Pro

I’ve been using Retrospect Professional 7.7.562 for quite some time now on my Windows 7 PC. Just today, an error appeared on my screen while doing the backup process. The error is stating “Grooming Backup Set Backup Set A failed, error -1017 (insufficient permissions).

You must recreate the Backup Set's Catalog File.” This is the only time that I got an error from Retrospect. And also, when trying to create a Catalog file, another error occurred stating “Can't load Snapshot tree, error -641 (chunk checksum didn't match).” So I did a Recycle backup and receive 56 errors “Backup Set format inconsistency (6 at 492295313)” with only the 9 digits changed . Can the issue be resolved by resetting the backup set? If no, then how can I resolve the issue?

To fix that problem, you will need to delete all the old backups by recycling the backup set that you already have. In case that option is not readily visible, then that means that you will need to throw that backup away and then you will start off with a clean target disk.

In case you will like to keep the older backup data that you have, then you will not need to be going on with the grooming process. You can just do a transfer snapshots action whereby you will need to copy the data somewhere else and thereby you will upgrade into a groom able backup in that process.

That error seems to be related to permissions indicated by “insufficient permissions”. If this is the case, make sure you are using an administrator account when running Retrospect. If you are using an admin account but still you receive the error, try starting the application as administrator. Right-click Retrospect and select “Run as administrator”. See if this works. If this doesn’t work, try to uninstall and reinstall the application.

Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller and install it. Once installed, start Revo Uninstaller then select Retrospect among the applications and click “Uninstall”. Follow the normal uninstall process. When uninstall is complete, click “Scan” to scan your computer for any leftover files and delete everything it finds. This removes everything the program created on your computer. When it is finished, close Revo Uninstaller then install Retrospect back.

See if this works. Also, try updating to the latest. Go to Retrospect for Windows. The latest version at the moment is Retrospect 15 and it supports Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10 including Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2019 both 32-bit and 64-bit.

It requires single or multi-core Intel processor, 4 GB RAM, and 10 GB free space.
