I'm trying to run Disk Cleanup on my computer to free some space. But it just stopped on responding when trying to compress old files. I tried for few times more and repeat the same process but it hangs on compressing old files. What should I do to complete the process? Please help.

Disk CleanUp Process Stopped on Responding on Compressing Old Files
Microsoft is already aware of this particular issue, in fact, they have a solution from their KB (knowledge base) site regarding this particular behavior. The actual message reads as:
Disk Cleanup is calculating how much space you will be able to free on (C:).
This may take a few minutes to complete.
Scanning: Compress old files
They have come up with an automatic way to fix this. If you go to this site:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/812248/the-disk-cleanup-tool-stops-responding-while-it-is-compressing-old-fil
Microsoft will fix it automatically for you. That's all well and good if you have internet connection. If not, there is another away of resolving this. However, it has something to do with the registry. Now, whenever you do anything to the registry, if you have somehow gotten it all wrong, there will be consequences to how your system will respond. The actual steps are also included in the link above, I did not enumerate them so that you'll read more about the workaround and its consequences should you decide that would be your course of action.
Good luck!
