Difference between WI-FI router and repeater- extension of connection

Today I was searching options to extend my Wi-Fi connection across floors in my house. I ended up with two main terms which I am struggling to understand. What is a the main difference between a WI-FI router and a WI-FI repeater. Given my initial problem which one is better suited for my needs?

Difference between WI-FI router and repeater- extension of connection

The Wi Fi repeater or extender is used mainly for extending wireless signals over large area. A wireless repeater mainly takes a signal from wireless router and rebroadcasts it to create another network. If the distance is too long and a direct connection has to be established then wireless repeater is the best option. It is used as a bridge.
