I would like to know what a Hub is and how did Hubs come about? What are the major functional roles of Hubs in computer networking? Why is it said that Hub cannot filter network traffic? Are Hubs still relevant in today’s Computing and networking? I will be happy if I get a detailed explanations on these issues. Benjamin Brown is my name from Liberia. I am 15 years of age.

Hub was a widely used Ethernet networking device in computing technology during the recent past and is gradually being out dated & replaced by Switches due to some of its drawbacks.
  • Hub belongs to the "physical layer" (Layer 1) in the OSI 7 layer network model. It is not considered as an intelligent device since it cannot recognize each networked device uniquely. So, a hub broadcasts the data packets to all the ports  during the process of data transmission. This also results in creating high network traffic.
