In 2012,the chinese will start to create their own technology ,a chips will power the Dawning 6000 super computer,Will this be a good idea?

Hi Jabuhan,

The Dawning Super computer was made by lead chip architecture Weiwu Hu at the International Solid State Circuits Conference last week in San Francisco. It is currently the only MIPS-based machine in the Top 500 supercomputers, but the 3C version could aim for the top ten. The design would make it a petascale supercomputer, a level of power achieved only by the very fastest computers running today.

To answer your query, the development of this computers is not considered to be an immediate threat to international dominance of x86 processors used by AMD an Intel, the Godson's efficiency means it will be less hampered by costly and limiting cooling dynamics. The development of this chips allows powerful machines as energy efficient which acts as a limiting factor on current supercomputers so based on my opinion it is a good idea since we could save energy.

Hope this could somehow give you an idea of the new technology developed by China.

The Dawning Information Industry is a manufacturer of supercomputer located in China. The company has manufactured several of the fastest supercomputers in the world that includes Nebulae which is the second fastest computer in the TOP500 list of June 2010. The Dawning 6000 is a high performance supercomputer which has an estimated speed of more than 1 quadrillion operations per second.

It features the Loongson processor as the core. Dawning 6000 is currently in joint development by the Dawning Information Industry Company and the Institute of Computing Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The operating system used on Dawning 6000 is based on the Linux kernel. Its clock is at 300 teraflops. At this rate, this supercomputer won’t top any speed lists but it’ll be one of the world’s most efficient.
