Hi Joseph, You should install the necessary drivers for your HDD first, You need to look for your HDD drivers, Then download it, After downloading it remove all your USB devices attached to your computer, As some USB drivers may be conflicting with the drivers of the HDD, Then start the installation of drivers, You should be prompted to connect your HDD as soon as installation finishes, If this does not work, Try the HDD with another computer to ensure that the problem is not with your HDD.

If the laptop that your friend gave to you as a gift is working properly and has no problem, you shouldn’t experience any problem with the hard drive not connecting. The hard drive of a regular computer or PC is different from the laptop. They differ in size. The hard drive of a laptop is very small compared to the one found and used on a PC which is big.

The hard drive of a regular PC is connected to the computer using 2 kinds of cables: the ribbon cable, and the power supply cable. The ribbon cable or the control cable, as others call it, is the cable that controls all the processes and activities of the computer and the hard drive. The power supply cable powers up the hard drive.

Without the power supply cable, the hard drive will not work because there is no AC power to power up the hard drive. On a laptop, there are no many cables connecting the hard drive to the computer. The internal hard drive of a laptop is connected only by a single ribbon cable.
