I just formatted my system and reinstalled operating system. My HDD have four partitions and have 20 GB space. The Computer runs fine. However I am unable access the F drive. I get an access denied pop up.

I downloaded a system restore program. With help of the software I can see the content. But I can’t access that drive directly.

Try to check in My Computer and see your F drive by right clicking on the device, can you see properties? Can you see security tab in properties? If you can’t see security tab it means you can't access advanced and change the rights.

I will suggest you to recover the lost data to another drive via that system restore program, reformat your F drive. Or you can try to backup the data and format the F drive using Norton disk doctor.

Or you can try the following steps:

  • Open a Command Prompt as administrator and type in cacls “Path to folderfolder name” /E /T /C /G Administrators:F and execute
  • And then type in takeown /f “Path to folderfolder name” /r /a and execute it.
  • This will give you the rights to access whatever folder you want to reach in the system. For instance if you want to take control of folder named MyFolder on E: drive, simply put in E:MyFolder in Path to folderfolder name below.

I hope you will be able to access your F drive data directly.

If you have not formatted your F drive then format it fully and your problem will be solved in case there are some files in your drive then you can first rescue these files and then you can make a full scan.
To see your drive conditions and to check that why it is not functional just do these steps and i am sure that your problem will be solved.

  • Go to START and then to run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter.
  • Here in new window check your drives and their types.
  • Make sure that You have a maximum of two primary drives and others are either extended partition or logical partition drives.
  • Once you see that most of drives are same as primary drives then make one of your drive extended partition drive and then format it also to make it effective.
  • Once done restart your computer and your drive will be online.

As I have shown here.
