This error is caused by the clip indicated in the error message. To fix this problem, do the following:

1. Download Handbrake, a free open source video transcoder by clicking here

2. Once the download completes, run the installer.

3. Click on the Handbrake shortcut on your desktop and wait for it to start.

4. Drag and drop your .avi file into the work area of Handbrake and click "Browse".

5. The default location is "My Documents". Type in the name of the file and click "Save".

6.  Click the green "Start" button and wait for the process to finish (the progress indicator is in the lower left corner).

Now you have a file that you can use in Camtasia and finish your project.

Since you are running Microsoft Windows 8, there should be no problem using Camtasia Studio on your computer. If you are using an old version of Camtasia, install the latest version to make sure the program is fully compatible with your operating system. To download the latest, visit Camtasia by TechSmith. Currently, the latest version for Microsoft Windows is Camtasia Studio 8 which supports Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

They recommend that users use 64-bit Microsoft Windows. Also, make sure you have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. According to the technical page, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 is already included in the package. In case it is not, download from Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone. Camtasia Studio also support Mac PCs. For Mac users, Camtasia Studio requires Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks or higher.

The latest current version for Mac is Camtasia for Mac 2. Supposedly, the AVI video format you want to import or play on Camtasia Studio is supported. There is probably something wrong on the video file that made Camtasia unable to play it. The best way to go around the issue is to convert the video file into another supported video format.

The following are the supported video formats that can be imported to Camtasia Studio:

  • * AVI
  • * WMV
  • * MPEG-1
  • * MP3
  • * WAV
  • * WMA
  • * MP4 (AVC/h.264 at no more than 30 fps)
  • * MOV (QuickTime for Windows must be installed)
  • * MTS and M2TS (version 8.4 and later)

The following formats are not supported for import:

  • * MPEG-2
  • * MOD
  • * Ogg
  • * WebM
  • * .RM (RealPlayer)
  • * .FLV (Flash Video)
  • * Video_TS
  • * 3GPP
  • * .SWF (created with non-TechSmith products)
  • * WMV (files created with GoToMeeting/GoToWebinar)
