To speed up my PC and free up some memory, I disabled some of the services that were inessential. I performed a disk check and restarted my PC. The disk check found no errors, and when I tried to log in, a window with Windows Activation Error and the Error code 0x80070426 appeared. What do I do?

Windows Activation Error window with the error code 0x80070426 can occur when you disable the Software Licensing service. If unable to go back to Services via normal mode you can try opening via Safe Mode using command prompt as follows:

  1. The PC should not be connected to any external storage devices.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Do either of the following:
  • In the case of a single OS, press and hold the F8 key as the PC restarts. Before the Windows logo appears, press F8. When the Windows logo appears, try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears. Then shut down and restart PC.
  • In the case of more than one OS, choose the OS and press F8.
  1. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, select Safe Mode in command prompt, and press Enter
  2. Log on to the PC using a user account which has administrator rights.

Then in the command prompt:

  1. Write services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate Software Licensing in the services list.
  3. Right-click on it and select Properties.
  4. Modify the “Startup type:” toAutomatic and select Ok.
  5. You may have to select Software Licensing again and click on “Restart the service” on the top-left corner for it to start instantly, or just reboot the PC if doing this from Safe Mode.
