The term “LAN” is the short term for “Local Area Network.” It is a network or group of computers and associated devices that share or use a common communications line or wireless link to a server. A LAN normally includes computers and peripherals connected or linked to a server within a distinct geographic area like a commercial establishment or an office.
Computers and other mobile devices use a LAN connection to share resources like network storage or printer. A local area network may serve as few as two or three users like in a small office network or several hundred users in a bigger office.
LAN networking is composed of cables, routers, switches, and other components that allow users to connect to internal servers, websites as well as other local area networks through WAN or Wide Area Network. The term “WAN” is the short term for “Wide Area Network.” It is a geographically distributed private telecommunications network that interconnects numerous LANs or local area networks.
In an enterprise, a WAN may composed of connections to the headquarters of a company, cloud services, branch offices, co-location facilities, and other facilities. A router or other multi-function device is normally used to connect a local area network to a wide area network.
