I have a Hard disk problem

I bought a new PC for my son a week ago. Everything was running very great until last night when my son opened it to do some research, the following error messages appeared on the screen telling:

“Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk. ”

I understood and realized that the problem is in the hard disk as described by the error code but I’m just wondering why it happened as early as this time considering that the PC was newly purchased. The hard disk model is: Seagate ST3200827AS ATA device.

Frankly, my idea in computer technology is very limited. And so, please explain to me why it happened and how can I correct this problem.

Dear Gresham,

It seems that your hard disk is in a bad condition. The reason why this message appears is because of the S.M.A.R.T ( Self Monitoring Analysis, Reporting Technology). This message appeared because your hard disk is about to be broken and it needs to be replaced.

The message you encountered was due to S.M.A.R.T, that was being out into the normal specs. S.M.A.R.T can also monitor minor and major problems. It can analyze the hardware side of the system but there is nothing you can do with those system files. S.M.A.R.T is only designed to detect some problems of the computers but checking disc and formatting, is not its job. So in order to solve your problem, you have to buy a new hard disk. I will suggest you to buy the Western Digital brand of hard disk because it lasts longer.

You can also try to check the hard disk. Right click my computer then click properties. Go into the Tools, then click Check. If nothing's happening, you really need to change the hard disk of your computer. But if your computer is under warranty, bring it back to the shop where you purchased it so that they will change the item which is broken. Because if you buy another hard disk, you will just spend more money. Also, if you will buy another hard disk that is under warranty, the warranty of your computer will be lost because you changed something on it.

So, I suggest that you bring the computer into the computer shop where you bought it and tell them that you have encountered this problem. So that they can change your hard disk with free service and free hard disk as well.

Well Gresham, first of all can you tell me which version of Windows are you using (XP, Vista or 7)?

This is mainly a hardware issue but you can try to fix it before just replacing it with a new one and losing all you data on the way. Here is what you could do to your hard disk before you send it back. Perform the disk error check. For that go to my computer, and right click on "C" drive. Go to Properties, then tools tab on error checking click check now. Check both boxes and start. You will get an error message about not being able to check while windows is running and do you want to next time windows starts? Click Yes and restart windows. Let if run through the process – it will take some time even though a lot of space will be empty in your new hard disk. Don't worry and let it run. It might fix those errors for you and you will not lose any data.
