How to do FAT allocation table repair in Windows XP

I have been a faithful windows XP user for the last 5 years, never had any major problem with it. Its only been recently that Windows hangs on log in screen. I researched a bit and found out that it is because of a corrupted FAT on C drive. How do I go about fat allocation table repair without disturbing my system too much?

Try the disk utility of windows (Checkdisk) “chkdsk /r /x c: or d: or any drive.

There is no other harmless way to check the allocation table other than that. If that won't work, your disk is badly corrupted. Yet you can use recovery software for it. Just google recovery tools.

How to do FAT allocation table repair in Windows XP

Hello Ceceliadestineyy,

Try to boot your system from safe mode and see if it passes through the login screen. If it does, then some drivers that you have recently installed are the ones affecting your system. To do this, just restart your computer and press F8 on your keyboard. A window will appear with an option to boot from safe mode.

If not, then you have to do a check disk utility in your hard disk. You can also use a disk management software such as Spotmau which is bootable. Get the software from their website and try to repair the partition.

If it does not work, then load your windows xp setup disk and repair the whole installation. Again if none of the above works, then you need to install the operating system in another partition in your drive or purchase another hard drive to use for installation. Note that you can create another partition on a free space of your current hard disk using the Spotmau software.

I hope you solve the problem with one of the above options.

How to do FAT allocation table repair in Windows XP

Hi dear,

It is very simple to overcome this problem. Just restart your computer, and press the F5 key when it starts. It will show you some windows starting options , such as:

Safe Mode

Safe Mode With Command Prompt, and many more.

Just choose Safe mode and hit enter. When you see the desktop, type "chkdsk" in RUN and press ok. It will take up to 1 minute, and it will fix your problem. Thanks.
