File Type for Scanning Documents

Hi!

My question is what file type is good for scanning documents?

I mean, which among .bmp, .tif, .gif, .pcx, .pdf, .rtf is good for scanning in terms of accuracy, size and speed.

File Type for Scanning Documents

Hi Quikee,

There are many formats to scan a document. But for the best quality it is depend on the document quality should be good.

As per your question that which format is best. I prefers the .PDF format, but some peoples not likes because of it's large size. Then In that case i prefers the .TIF format. Because TIF is only the format which scans the best specially for the documents and Black&White images. I have described below about all you can check from there.

TIF

For TIF files, most programs allow either no compression or LZW compression (lossless, but is less effective for 24 bit color images). Adobe Photoshop also provides JPG or ZIP compression too (but which greatly reduces third party compatibility of TIF files). "Document programs" allow ITCC G3 or G4 compression for 1 bit text (Fax is G3 or G4 TIF files), which is lossless and tremendously effective (small).

PNG

PNG uses ZIP compression which is lossless, and slightly more effective than LZW (slightly smaller files). PNG is a newer format, designed to be both versatile and royalty free, back when the LZW patent was disputed.

JPEG

JPEG always uses lossy JPG compression, but its degree is selectable, for higher quality and larger files, or lower quality and smaller files.

GIF

GIF uses lossless LZW compression, effective on indexed color. GIF files contain no dpi information for printing purposes

File Type for Scanning Documents

Choosing a certain format for scanned documents depends on several criteria.

Compression quality is one of them. If you are constrained to use small files, then JPG is the best choice, as it delivers smaller files than other formats (obviously with a loss of quality); otherwise TIF and PNG offer the best quality.

If you scan ordinary documents and quality is not the main criterion, PDF format can be the best.

In terms of quality, TIF is preferred by most professionals.
