Error when backing up files using Norton Ghost – database is locked

I was backing up files in my computer using Norton Ghost when unexpectedly I got this error message (see screenshot below). 

I tried to back-up again but the same error happened. 

I tried to surf the web and it did give a solution which I followed.  

Yes, it temporarily solved the problem but how could I prevent the event from happening? 

I would really want to know what’s causing the problem.  

I hope you can help.

Error when backing up files using Norton Ghost – database is locked

Fortunately Symantec has a solution for this problem.

Follow my instructions to resolve this.

1. Go to Start and click on Run.
2. Type sevices.msc and enter
3. Find the Backup exec system recovery in the services list, right click on it and select stop to disable it
4. Delete the catalog.dat file which should be located in the root partition Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSymantecFileBackup in Windows XP or ProgramDataSymantecFileBackup in Windows Vista or Windows 7
5. Go to services again and enable Backup exec system recovery service

You should be able to back up files now.

Hello,

Try this if it’s possible the solution to your problem, if you’re using windows XP/2000/2003 and then attempt to go to start menu then run the services.msc, and then after that simply backup the Exec System Recovery service.

Try to remove the Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataSymantecFileBackupcatalog.dat. After you erase the file then the catalog.dat file will be re-formed when the following job is run.

Simply restart the backup Exec System Recovery service and then reinstall Folder, then the folder Back up.

If you’re using windows Vista/2008 same process, but you just simply erase the ProgramDataSymantecFileBackupcatalog.dat.
