Difference and advantage of using a Hot Backup and a Cold Backup

Hello Marsha,

Hot backup is a kind of backup that is dynamic or active. It is done when database is running and data is being updated, added, or read by its users. What is does not do is handle running transactions at the time of backup.

The hot backup is limited to the database management system (DBMS) facility only, and it is advisable that they should be done during low working hours. Hot backups do not require downtime; hence they are taken in environments where database is intended to be online 24-hours a days and 7-days a week.

Cold backup on the other hand is taken when database is offline. It is not accessible for updating and it cannot be used at that time.

It can be done by the database management system as well as the OS. They are mostly taken during weekends or during the end or a working day, a time when the database is offline

With cold backup, the database does not have to be running 24 hours a day; it could be taken in intervals.
