What may be the value of x in the title? I mean, Windows is a very popular OS and so is Linux. Linux is a good alternative to Windows but what may be the one, which is an alternative to both of them. I hope that you have understood how to find the value of x.

I guess if you are looking for another operating system that is the best alternative for the 2 mentioned operating systems, I guess it would have to be Mac OS X. With these 3 major operating systems, Microsoft Windows is the most expensive. This is also maybe the reason why out of the 3 operating systems, it is the most popular when it comes to being pirated.

In Microsoft Windows, even if you are already a Windows user, if you plan to upgrade your operating system, you still need to pay a high price. With Mac OS X, if you are already a Mac user and you want to upgrade your operating system, the latest operating system or the operating system that you wish to upgrade to is free.

But in order to upgrade your operating system to a much higher version if not the latest, you must still be running on Mac OS X. The cheapest of the 3 is Linux because it is the only operating system that is totally free.
