Dear Muench Don yes you can upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 but it depends which version of windows 7 you have i.e. upgrade version which will allow you to upgrade from previous OS which is must have requirement and the other one if full retail copy of windows 7 which allows you to have a clean fresh installation. The upgrade version of windows 7 will enable you to upgrade form windows XP having your settings and applications that you have in windows XP. Otherwise for a fresh install your old settings and applications will be deleted. There is no online process involved in this and only part where you can utilize online thing is the windows update part where the windows 7 can download updates to install it with the new operating system.

Unfortunately, upgrading from Microsoft Windows XP to Microsoft Windows 7 is not possible. If you are using Windows XP and you want to shift to Windows 7, there is no direct path to upgrade Windows XP to Windows 7. But don’t get disappointed because you can still install Windows 7 as long as your machine is compatible with Windows 7 by doing a clean install.

Upgrading and doing a clean install are different. When you upgrade an operating system, the actual process is done directly on the existing operating system. The new operating system is installed over the existing platform. The old operating system is not deleted automatically. The old system is moved to a folder and gets deleted automatically after a specific period of time.

Your user data and applications are migrated automatically to the new operating system. When the upgrade is complete, you are ready to use it. But with a clean install, you do everything from scratch. You format the partition, install the new operating system, install the drivers for the different hardware, and install all the applications you have.

It is too much work but I actually prefer it than upgrading because you get a fresh start. Since you need to do a clean install, before formatting your hard drive make sure it is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7. To install Windows 7, your machine should meet the following:

• 1 GHz processor both 32-bit and 64-bit
• 1 GB RAM for 32-bit and 2 GB RAM for 64-bit
• 16 GB free hard drive space for 32-bit and 20 GB free hard drive space for 64-bit
• Microsoft DirectX 9-compatible video card with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

These are the official system requirements for Microsoft Windows 7. If your machine meets all of these then you can continue installing Microsoft Windows 7.
