Overwrite Mac OS with Windows 7

I recently won a MacBook AIR 11" 64GB laptop from a promo. I have always been a Windows user and I never had experience with Mac OS. I was wondering if I could format it and install Windows 7 over Mac OS. I don't want to use a virtual machine or Dual boot. I only want Windows running on it.

Is it possible to do so? Would there be harmful effects if I did?

Hi Charles,

Yes, what you have in mind is perfectly possible. You can clean your Apple computer of its Mac OS and install a Windows operating system over it. One thing though that you do have to take note of, that is very important is, first before you do anything, you must check the hardware specifications of the MacBook AIR you won and see if the hardware can support a Windows OS.

If the specifications don't match, then that is the only time you will not be able to install a Windows OS over your Mac OS on your MacBook AIR. So some research may have to be done first.

Overwrite Mac OS with Windows 7

You should be able to install Windows 7 on a MacBook Air, as long as you have an optical drive, and as long as the BIOS is configured to boot from the optical drive then it should be able to read the Windows 7 installation media. This should be the case as Mac OS reinstallation is done through DVD as well.

What you really need to take note of are all the details of your MacBook Air, if these are available. You have to know what chipset it has, audio controllers, video controllers, usb controllers and basically everything inside it you need to be able to know and take note of before you start installing a different operating system. Although Windows 7 has a vast collection of native drivers, if after overwriting Mac OS X and you have bangs in the Device Manager, this will start to become a problem. So make sure you know what your MacBook Air has, and make sure you can get Windows drivers for these, and there shouldn't be a problem.
