How to restrict files and folders on Windows Vista?

I need help in putting a restriction on specific files and folders on my Windows Vista. I am using a Workgroup computer with my family and relatives as co-users, so I need to put a restriction on accessing my files on my hard drive.

Can someone please help me and give me detailed instructions, on how to do that.

I am running Windows Vista.

How to restrict files and folders on Windows Vista?

Most of us are using a shared computer with family members and oftentimes, without knowing, our files are sometimes moved into different locations or deleted accidentally. So, we want to set a restriction on that specific files and folders. To do this, continue reading below:

• Go to the file or folder that you want to add restriction and then select Properties.
• When the file or folder properties opens, click the Security tab then click the Edit button.
• On the Permission to file or folder window, click the Add button to open the Select Users or Group window.
• When the Select Users or Groups window opens, enter the username of the account that you want to restrict access in the box below.
• Do not forget to click the Check Names button, beside the text box to validate the account. Or if you are not sure about the username, click the Advanced button below the text box to open the search window.
• To search the entire users click Find Now button on the search window and then search for the user that you want to add the restriction and then click OK.
• Now, you will see the user names listed in the Permissions for file or folder window.
• Check the Deny check box in the Full Control option.
• An alert box will appear from Windows Security, click Yes and then click OK.

The file or folder is already restricted.

How to restrict files and folders on Windows Vista?

If you are using Windows Vista and you want to encrypt your files and folders, here’s how to do it. This method applies to Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. Open Windows Explorer then navigate to the location of the file or folder you want to protect or encrypt. Right-click it and select “Properties.” In Properties window, in “General” tab, click “Advanced” at the bottom.

In Advanced Attributes window, under “Compress or Encrypt attributes” section, check “Encrypt contents to secure data” then click “OK” all throughout.

If you are encrypting a folder, you will be prompted if you want to apply the encryption just to the folder or to its subfolders and files as well. The first time you encrypt a file or folder in Windows Vista, you will be prompted to back up your encryption key. When you encrypt a folder, any file or folder you move into the encrypted folder will be encrypted.

If you move anything out of the encrypted folder, the encryption remains.
