Windows media player error in Vista

I am using Windows Vista 32 bit and when trying to launch Windows Media player, it gives me an error,

Instruction at 0x762794c4 referenced memory at 0x3f800000.

The memory could not be read”

This error occurs when I tried playing an .AVI movie, that I downloaded yesterday. I don’t think this is caused by a virus.

I had a full scan using my AVG Antivirus, and no threats were found. I cannot use the system restore, since I disabled system protection on my hard drives.

Can someone help me regarding this problem?

You said that this only happens, when you play the .AVI movie that you downloaded. Try playing it to another movie player if it will play. If not then, the .AVI you have downloaded is either corrupted or a fake one.

I have experienced downloading a movie that is fake. Another reason is that your media player is corrupted, that’s why it cannot play .AVI movie file. Probably, the codec for playing an AVI file is missing. You can download media player codec by going to this site.

Only do the above solutions, if you are sure that your computer is not infected with a virus. I suggest you run Malware bytes or use Microsoft Security Essentials, to scan your computer. If all doesn’t work, then better to repair your windows installation.
