The AirPort Extreme, Apple Inc.’s residential gateway product, combines the functionality of a network switch, router, NAS, and wireless access point plus various other functions. The sixth generation which is the latest model is able to support 802.11ac networking in addition to older standards. Originally, the name AirPort Extreme refers to any of Apple’s AirPort products that implemented the newly initiated 802.11g Wi-Fi standard.

This distinguishes it from older devices that operate on slower 802.11a and b standards. The AirPort Extreme has gone into 3 different physical forms. The oldest models were packaged the same as with the original AirPort Base Station, that is with a round housing which they refer to as the “flying saucer”.

Hello,

Airport extreme is a device that combines the functionality of an AP (wireless access point), router, network switch, and NAS (network-attached storage). It is a device that essentially simplifies the set up of a wireless network in a home or office. The reason people are inclined to use it is that Apple devices come with a massive network of support in the form of human, information, and application support. The device itself is not groundbreaking or even fairly new. There are better quality devices that perform in the same manner and have much better performance.
