Have you got any errors? QuickTime player can use various codecs and you can always add more codecs to expand your QuickTime's features by means of plug-ins or other software. When the QuickTime runs an AVI file, it will check the codecs used to encode the audio and video on it. If the audio and video were compressed using the codec that the QuickTime can play, you can play the file with no issues. But if the audio and video were compressed with a codec that the QuickTime cannot use, you will receive an error. If you want to know which codec was used in compressing the audio and video file, follow the steps below: (This is for QuickTime 6 and earlier versions)

1. Launch the file in your QuickTime Player.

2. Select Movie and then click Movie Properties.

3. From the left menu under the Properties windows, click Sound Track or Video Track.

4. From the right menu, click Format and it will show the codec used.

For QuickTime 7:

1. Launch the file in your QuickTime Player.

2. Under the Windows menu, click Show Movie Info. The codec is listed there.
