Hey,

I have a DSL connection to my desktop machine, through wired LAN, that I want to share with laptops in my home over WiFi. How can I setup up my private WiFi network for Internet? Do I need additional software? My operating system is Windows 7 Home.

Hello Hj2011,

If you want to have a WiFi Connection in your home, then you need to set-up wireless Internet connection. You can do this by yourself, or you can have a technician do it for you.

Here are the requirements to set-up a wireless connection:

  • Operating System that will support wireless connection. Since your operating system is Windows 7, you will not have any problem with this as WiFi is supported by your OS.
  • Wireless Router.
  • WiFi Enabled computer (should have wireless adapter installed). Your desktop can use the cable because the router has a slot where you can connect the Ethernet cable but your Laptops should be WiFi Enabled.

Instructions to install wireless connection:

  • What I can advice you as well is to ask your current DSL provider if they can provide you with a wireless router or you can buy one for yourself.
  • If you have this installation done, you will have your own way of managing your WiFi connection. You can set-up security as well. Or if it was installed by your technician, let them set it up for you and teach you as well how to manage it.

I hope I was able to give you an overview of WiFi.

When setting up private Wi-Fi network for Internet, you need the software CD provided by the router manufacturer. By following the CD installation, this will guide you to set-up private Wi-Fi network. You can setup your network name or SSID, secure a password for your wireless, this called network security key, WEP or WPA.

This allows your Wi-Fi network not accessible to anyone not unless you give out the network security key. This can be done also through the manual steps. You need to login to the GUI, internal settings of the router.

  • Open Internet Explorer, type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.
  • Log-in using the credentials.
  • Once login, go to Wireless tab.
  • Set your desired network name or SSID.
  • Click on the wireless security, then setup the encryption code.

  • Save the settings and close the browser. The steps will let you setup your private Wi-Fi; only accessible to the person you have given permission to connect.
