I have 3 laptops at home. I have a wireless router and I am thinking of adding a local hard drive where the three laptops can save files at anytime and access these files anytime as well. How can I achieve this? What will I need to make this work?

Easier and cheaper way is to have an external HDD attached to one of the laptops, and share it with the other laptop on the network. You would create a folder name on the HDD and share it with the other members on your network.
 
The other way is to purchase a Networked storage (NAS), those are about $1000 and can be connected directly to the router so everyone can access it and use it.
