Security in Internet Connection provided by the various company.

Hi,

I know several people who use others' unsecured connections in their neighborhoods to connect to the internet, for example, at a local library, restaurant or using a neighbor's connection.

Can the people or company who are actually paying for the connection have any access to the others' information, such as being able to read e-mails, see passwords, financial transactions, IMs, view or hear Skype conversations, etc.?

I was discussing this with a neighbor, who said "If they don't know enough to secure their connection with a password, they probably wouldn't know anything about seeing who else is using their connection or what they are doing on it."

But what do you think?

Hi,

Yes they can if they are logging traffic through a proxy server and have a packet sniffer on the network they can acquire all this data. Basically, I wouldn't connect to a public network for doing online banking, etc. or anything that has sensitive information on it.

Well, possible that they can see those information, such as read emails, passwords, financial transactions, IM's and Skype. There are intruders that has the tools and knowledge on how to steal all these information.

There are spyware that might inflect someone else's computer and monitor the computer's transactions. Can view the websites visited often, see reports and email transactions and other information they want.

Most unsecured wireless connections is vulnerable to this attack because if someone has the right tools and knowledge to do all these, then they might get what they want.

But this can't be done easily if your computer has security software installed, Firewall and Anti-Virus software and other security software needed for computer protections. Update all these from time to time to secure your Internet usage.
