Hello guys,

Few days back I purchased a used desktop computer with 2.67 GHz processor,512 MB RAM and 160 GB hard disk. Last night when I tried to repair/re-install my MS Office Student and Teacher edition.

I kept getting the error(mentioned below)

Error:

Microsoft Office 2003 Setup

Error 1402. Setup cannot open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRunOptionalComponentsMSFS. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for assistance. For information about how to contact PSS, see D:FILESPFILESMSOFFICEOFFICE111033PSS10R.CHM.

OK

I have Windows XP Home Edition installed in it. How can I fix this error?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Maybe you do not have necessary permissions to alter some sections on your registry that you needed to repair / install MS Office. Or there may be a third-party application that denies the needed access on your registry subkeys.

To fix this, try any of the solutions below:

1. Establish permission for Everyone group on your registry subkeys shown in the error message and set it to Full Control.

2. Disable any third-party application such as WebRoot Spysweeper.

3. Put your computer system on a clean boot state and then run the Office setup again.

4. Use the Fix It tool on Microsoft website provided below:

You can try uninstalling Microsoft Office 2003 completely. Then after that, check your computer for any possible errors. Use a disk utility application to check the system.

For a much thorough diagnostics on the system, use a disk utility application like PC Tools Performance Toolkit, Norton Utilities, or Norton System Works. Then after the disk check, install Microsoft Office 2003 again. Be sure you are logged in as administrator before installing it.

If the installation still fails, disable first your antivirus for a couple of minutes then restart the installation. Just re-enable your antivirus after the installation is finished.

It is possible that your antivirus is interfering with the installation process which what usually happens.
