It seems this error doesn’t only happen to you but to so many users as well. The issue doesn’t always involve the use of VLC media player. Other users who have this error are sometimes just opening or browsing their hard drive and others try to play a video with Windows Media Player.

I’m not sure what the cause of this issue is because even the Microsoft Community website staff can’t provide a direct solution and none of the instructions they gave worked. Anyway, try this one out. Click Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet, Network and Sharing, Advanced Sharing Settings, and then Home Group Connections.

Here, if your setting is set to “Allow Windows to Manage Connection”, change it to “Use User Accounts and Passwords to Connect to other Computers”. If your setting is already set to “Use User Accounts and Passwords to Connect to other Computers”, leave it that way. Next, go to the other computer which you want to access then enter your username and password. See if this works.

Since this issue involved the use of VLC media player, try playing the video using Windows Media Player and see what happens. If it works on Windows Media Player, try running VLC media player with administrative privileges. To do this, right-click on the VLC media player icon and select Properties. Select Compatibility tab. Under “Privilege level”, check “Run this program as an administrator” then click OK.

Launch VLC media player and play the video. See if it works. If you are not using the latest version, download the latest from VLC media player for Windows.
