There are two ways to check your hard drive for errors. First option is using the built-in disk utility in Microsoft Windows called CHKDSK. It is used to check disks for errors. You can use this in two ways: using the graphical user interface and using the command prompt.

To use the graphical user interface or GUI, start Windows Explorer then right-click the drive you want to check and select “Properties”. In the properties window, go to “Tools” tab then click “Check now” under “Error checking” section. In “Check disk options” dialog, make sure the following are checked:

  • Automatically fix file system errors
  • Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

Click “Start” to start checking the drive for errors. To run CHKDSK in the command prompt, press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” then hit Enter. In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:

chkdsk /f c:

Replace “c:” with your target drive like for example, “d:”, “e:”, and so on. Another way to check the drive for errors is with third-party software like PC Tools. Download PC Tools Performance Toolkit and install. Once installed, start PC Tools then go to “Recovery” tab and click “Repair Drives”. Select the drive and other options then click “Start”.
