Intel has always been dominating in the field of processors, both for the personal use and for the servers too. There is nothing else to say except the fact that they have the best engineers of the world.
AMD is a little behind Intel always and it’s because of few reasons. You asked what would AMD has to do in order to compete the Intel 3rd generation processors, the ivy bridge processors, well they need to invest more in their industry to come close to Intel standards.
Since AMD is not of a big scale company like Intel, it will always get limited due to a number of resources. For example, their FX series thought to be of top class but as soon as Sandy Bridge hit the stores, the FX was history. It is merely impossible for AMD to deliver what Intel is delivering in such low price and margin.
