Hi All,

Hello. I need to know if there’s a way for me to store hundreds of different passwords we have accumulated while administering our network. We have data such as local passwords of servers, databases, accounts, “robot” active directory, switches, inverters, ESX and so on. I was thinking of doing it on Microsoft Excel with AxCrypt encrypts but I am not sure if it’s the best way to store them. Can you give me suggestions? Thank you.

Hallo  Jassy,

I will also suggest that you use excel for storing the passwords, but then you will have to use very strong security mechanisms to protect those password from intruders and any people who have bad intentions and therefore want to gain access to the excel file.

Apart from the Axcrypt encrypts which you should of course use, make sure that you have password protected the excel file itself using passwords. To do this, use the following procedure:

  • Click on file and the save as when the excel document is open.
  • Choose to save in the excel 97-2003 workbook and then click on it.
  • In the save as window, click on tools and then general options.
  • Provide a password that you will be using to open the document in the window that will come up.
  • Click OK when you are done.

This way you will have protected the file so that before someone reaches the encrypted passwords and tries to break them, they will have taken a lot of time and possibly given up.
