I have lots of email in my Outlook Express inbox. I compacted my email folder and saw inbox corrupted. I think .dbx files got corrupted. I tried to restore backup file, but Outlook Express was unable to show any email in my Inbox folder. Is it possible to fix corrupted *.dbx files manually? Thank You

You need to locate the corrupt .dbx file.  To do that, start the Registry Editor tool to find where Outlook Express stores files.

  1. Press Start >> Run
  2. Type regedit into the search box and press Enter
  3. In the Registry Editor window that opens up look for something similar to the following in the left hand side of the screen HKEY_CURRENT_USER >> Identities >> XYZ >> Software >> Microsoft >> Outlook Express >> 5.0 (XYZ will be your username and 5.0 is the version of Outlook Express you are running)
  4. In the right hand side of the screen, look for the Store Root setting and double-click on it.  This is the path where Outlook Express stores files.
  5. Copy the path from here

Please do not make any changes to the system registry as this can  have a very negative effect on your system.

You will now need to transfer all the mailbox files – I have described the steps below.

  1. Close Outlook Express if you have it open
  2. Open Windows Directory and paste the full path you copied earlier
  3. Press Enter
  4. Copy all the files from here into a new location
  5. Delete the files from the original location that you copied from

To transfer the .dbx files into Outlook Express, follow the steps below:

  1. Restart Outlook Express
  2. Click File >> Import
  3. On the Import window that opens on the screen, select Outlook Express version that you are running and from where the files will be imported from. (if you are not certain about this, select Outlook Express 6)
  4. Click the Next button
  5. Click on the Browse button to open up the location where your saved your files earlier
  6. Click the Next button
  7. From here you can either import All Folders, or you can select which folders you want to import
  8. Click the Next button
  9. Open Outlook Express
