Help: Hidden files cannot be shown

Hi!

I was having problems with my laptop long before. I can hide and undhide certain files without worries.

If I wanted to hide a file it was easy to show it in any folder by going to the folder options.

But it is different now, I had enabled "Do not show hidden files" on the folder options quite long ago and now, no matter how I clicked the "Always show hidden files" button, the files which are hidden do not show.

I keep on going back to the folder options menu and still the "Do not show Files" is still enabled.

How is this possible?

Is this a work of a virus?

Please help me.

This problem is due to a virus which keeps on enabling "Do not show hidden files" even if you enable "Show hidden files". Please follow below steps to solve this problem.

  1. Go to Start > Run. Type "regedit" and press Ok.
  2. Now navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer Advanced Folder Hidden SHOWALL].
  3. In the right pane click on "Checked value" and change it to 1. Also click on "Default value" and change its value to 2.

This will solve your problem.

Thanks!

Hi! Peter,

Kindly try this procedure below,

1. Double click on the "My computer" icon.
2. Select the "Tools menu" and click "Folder options".
3. Click to view the tab.
4. Select Show hidden files.
5. Under the "Hidden files" and folders section.
6. Remove / Uncheck hide empty drives in the "Computer folder".
7. Remove / Uncheck hide extensions for known file types.
8. Click Apply button and then "Ok" button.

If still no effect after doing the above procedures, kindly update your Antivirus and scan your computer or you may also use Malwarebytes because a virus infection disables the Show hidden files and folders function in Windows. After scanning you may do another option which is to access "Registry edit".

Registry edits procedure is to enable show hidden files and folders,

1. Click "Start" and click "Run".
2. Type REGEDIT and press enter.
3. Click the plus sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE , then "Software", then Microsoft, then Windows, then Current version, then Explorer, then Advanced, then Folder, then Hidden, then SHOWALL.
3. On the right side, double click on Checked value and change its value data to 1 (Virus may change it to 0 or 2).
