Error 1402 Could Not Open Key Error

I am trying to install Microsoft Office 2000 to my Windows7, but I am having this error 1402.

It appears during the installation and I could not finish installing because of this.

I temporarily disable my antivirus and firewall thinking that it is blocking the installation process, but it’s not. I checked for any Microsoft Updates then manually install it. After restarting my computer for the changes to take effect, I still cannot continue.

I run the Disk Clean Up and clean the temporary files, but I really have no luck.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-Bit OS with Pentium Dual Core T4200@ 2GHz, 2 GB RAM, Display Adapter: Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family.

I need to install MS – Office 2000 for my job. Is there a better way to fix the issue?

I tried running to a different profile.

I log out from my own profile as the administrator of my computer then run the installation disk of MS Office 2000 again, but I am still receiving the same error.

Does this error have something to do with a corrupt registry?

Because I’m seeing some registry key name.

How can I fix my registry?

Please help me.

Thanks in advance.

 Hi James,

I have read the issue that you have installing MS Office 2000 on your windows 7.

I found out that the error is due to the conflicting software on the computer.

So the issue can be resolve by just checking the computer for softwares that might be conflicting with the MS Office 2000 that you’re installing.

The process is called clean boot up.

Steps to put your computer in clean boot:

1. Click Start
2. Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
4. Click OK.
5. When you are prompted, click Restart.
6. After the computer starts, check if you are still getting the same error.

The error message 1402 is due to the damaged keys in your computer’s registry and it won’t allow you to continue with the installation of MS Office 2000 until you repaired them.

Make use of registry checker feature to correct the problem by running a scan for registry damage fixing.

You are required to have an administrator access to your computer in order to proceed.

Before starting make sure you turn on the windows virus protection software’s including Norton, McAfee, AVG etc. So that they won’t create any hindrance in the installation process.

  1. Click "Start" button
  2. Click "All Programs" option
  3. Click Accessories" option
  4. Click "System Tools" option.
  5. Click on the "System Information" option
  6. Click on the "Tools" menu
  7. Click on the "Registry Checker" option
  8. If you receive no error message for the registry then you can manually repair any damage.
  9. Close out all windows and programs that are open and click on the "Start" button
  10. Click on the "Search Programs and Files"
  11. Type "scanreg /fix"
  12. Click on the "OK" button
  13. Click on the "Yes" button and your computer will restart.
  14. You can now try to install Office 2000 again

Hopefully you will be able to resolve the problem now.
