I guess using Microsoft Word Online has the same functions as when you are using a regularly installed Microsoft Office Word. Office Online is a clickable feature in Microsoft Windows 8. But if you are using Microsoft Windows 7 and earlier, you can visit Office.com to use the different applications available in Office Online such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and others.

The advantage of using Office Online or Microsoft Word Online is that you can immediately share the document you are working on with other collaborators. Just click on the Share button found on the top right corner of the screen and you will be able to share it with others. The files are saved in OneDrive.

The only difference when using Office Online is it requires an internet connection to be able to use the online applications. The good thing is that you don’t need to install it on your computer. You can instantly use it by simply visiting the website and logging in to your account. Sharing the file is also instantaneous.

In the offline version, for you to share a file to others, you need to save it first in your hard drive and then send it as attachment via email. In Office Online, you can see the progress on the spot while other collaborators are working.
