Black screen with the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction error

Hi People,

I have been trying to deal with this problem on restart a black screen and a pop up message was on my screen.

I've briefly looked up in Google how to handle this, but I'd like a more personalized answer.

Hi Jack,

As a first approach you can verify your HDD for errors and fix them. There is a build in solution for that: using the CheckDisk utility of your Windows.

– click on Start=>All Programs=>Accessories=>Command Prompt (please note that you must be part of the Administrative group)

– type: {chkdks C: /f /v} without"{", where:

            -> C: is the drive verified,

            -> /f – this will fix any errors if found,

            -> /v – this is only for yiur information: will display each file as it is checked

Please reply if this will fix this problem. If not, I will bring to you a more technical solution. In your reply, please include the version of your Windows, and your file system type (if it's FAT or NTFS) -> you can check this right clicking on your drive letter and select Properties.
