ANNOUNCEMENT BY HP OF GEN8 SERVERS

On February 13, 2012, Monday, HP advertised that its next computer network system would be the Gen8 Family of Servers.  What is interesting about this is that this advertisement came before the official advertisement of Intel regarding the supporting E5 server CPUs, which means that HP would say nothing about the Central Processing Unit or the operation of those systems.

Even though the data of the CPU was accessible, it was going to be a show on the side as far as the principal drive of the Gen8 project was concerned — thereby making the overall TCO (specially Opex) better by turning them into more automatic servers which can be more controllable and faster to repair whenever an issue arises, together with the possibility to keep, with data center infrastructure management (DCM) abilities, and also a basic modification regarding how services and help are conveyed.

The major elements of the Gen8 server technology statement comprised of the following accompanied with more gravity in it:

  • In-House Controlled Process – A room of abilities and equipments that furnish enhanced with a no agent limited comprehension which allows faster and decreased work expenses provisions, which include quicker boot sequences, “a one-click” new set of command of one or more systems, smart and really enhanced time to boot systems, and the operating time systems.  It seems that this is carried out by much more effective in-house administration control and pre-equipping many softwares on the incorporated flash memory, which in turn is utilized by the in-house controller.  HP states that the mixture of these equipments can amplify user output up by 65%.   One of the striking characteristics is an iPhone application that does a scanning of a set of rules printed on the computer network and which goes back inside the Insight Management Environment pile and which causes it to begin the pertinent manuscript to cater the computer network.  With the likelihood of a scheme, however, a nice display of one.
  • Intelligent Keeping – Looking more like the map of a road than one commodity, Smart Storage begins  by introducing the Advanced Data Mirroring, a three times excessive striping systems that furnish a claimed 1000X (there is no possibility for me to check this figure, but it seems that it is logical to say that 3 stripes should be more trusted than 2 by far if one replaces the damaged disk immediately).  Intelligent flash caching was also a statement for enhanced operation and a mixture of quicker memory and PCIe3 I/O.
  • Situation-Informed Infrastructure Systems – Added under a term called opaque “3D Sea of Sensors” (the faculties are not really 3D and there isn’t any apparent “sea” involved), HP has added a few highly dominant administration of infrastructure abilities that furnish  on the spot gain and which can also work as forming part of an all-embracing DCIM clarification.  The essential attributes comprised of situation-informed racks and networks, smart PDUs, and structure-level competent capping.  Attached with different non mentioned equipments, these are the central abilities to enforce complete smart power and cooling administration, visualization, and amount of work-informed tasks.  It is to be noted that for these abilities to be used, one has to purchase a complete HP infrastructure pile of racks, and PDUs and their affiliated software and also the computer networks.  Investigating this well, it only makes sense that HP has important plans on the DCIM space, and current merchants with whom ‘contest’,  lies, should be overlooking this.
  • Awareness on the Internet – In various ways, this was the most important part of the communiqué, included; since is a full internet doorway for the distribution (based in cloud eventually as is most of the things (from Kleenex to tractor parts)  distinctive, for repairs and for additional assistance to HP clients.  The assistance is comprised of reactive diagnostic and remediation and also a built-up menu of proactive assistance and increased operational help, and the doorway serves as a principal integrator of all data on a specific asset, which includes the cycle of life and details of contract and also specialized data.  HP guarantees that this efficiency will cut down time in the settlement of issues up by two thirds and enhance the first call costs settlement.  Eventually it is not possible to evaluate the actual running attributes of a complicated assistance like this one from that of a display and demonstration done on stage, but on the surface, HP has made a noticeable difference when it comes to distribution of assistance with this ability.

My conclusion to this is that this is a meaningful and more serious advertisement than the recent ones made by HP or any other conventional computer network merchant, and it places challengers on a high position.  In a month or two, we can assume to see other challenging advertisements, and I believe that a few fragments of hardware, like the PCle-3, with trusted enhanced memory and operation, and continued incorporation of flash memory kept, will be fully or partially duplicated by challengers.  What will most likely make HP become distinctive, is the increasing consequences of its smart provisioning, identification and bring-to-date abilities, together with other assets of their doorway assistance and affiliated assistance.

For HP clients, this is outright good communication. For challengers, it is obviously a confrontation, and we impatiently anticipate their reactions. All HP clients are encouraged to give their comments on these advertisements.
