Is it true that the next generation of the Xbox is expected this year? And what are the new features that we should expect?
The Xbox 360 update features
Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched in 2005, it carved out a place among gamers who didn't want to wait for the Nintendo Wii or Sony Playstation 3 to hit store shelves.
The follow up to the original Xbox expands on the original console's promise by offering greater online play, a deep online marketplace and several multimedia features previously only seen in set top boxes (ESPN, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Netflix). Microsoft emphasized that the company is trying to transform its Xbox from a gaming console into an entertainment hub.
The company's biggest announcement was for a planned multimedia service called Xbox SmartGlass, which would link the Xbox360 console to smartphones and tablets.
With the service, users could watch a TV program and receive related information about it on mobile gadget, and the app would be available later for Windows phones, Windows 8 and "other portable devices".
Barring any surprises, Nintendo is the only company planning to release a new console this year, and its signature feature is a large tablet controller that resembles an Apple (APPL) iPad.
