Word document does open after it is saved.

I am using windows vista as my operating system. I have Microsoft word 2007 installed in my PC. But I can’t open any saved file. I mean whenever I want to save a new file it saves properly but after then I can’t open them. I have uninstalled and re-installed my Microsoft office again. But still I am unable to open any file. Another program of Microsoft office is working fine. How can I solve this?

First of all, check some basic things.

Which method are you using to open the file – double clicking on the file name or using the open function from the file menu (or from Microsoft Office button in case of word 2007)?

 

Have you tried re-booting the computer?

 

Are you still facing the problem after re-booting?

 

Is the file available in MS Explorer?

 

(Possibly it is in your my Documents folder).

 

Have you checked the extension of the file name? For MS Word 2007 documents, the file extension should be .docx, if you haven’t changed the setting to make another format as default.

 

Does this problem persist with other files?

 

If other files do have the same problem, then the problem is with MS office itself and you should try a repair install. If no other file is affected by the same problem, then you should try “save as” option to save from your work computer.

 

If all the above methods fail, then the only place left to look is the registry file. Try deleting the reference to MS Word from the registry. It will force the program to re register which will eventually fix the problem.

Hi Antonio,

Just try saving through the save as feature in MS word, Please make sure that in that file extension is selected as default docx.

Now try saving it to desktop or something like that, If you can't still open the file means right click on it and click on properties and select change near the open with option now a box appears in that make sure you tick always open this file with this option and then select your MS word from the option, if you can't find it select browse and select it manually from C/program files/MS office.

Good day..

Your problem may be caused by Microsoft and Automatic Updates. Maybe you installed an Automatic update for Microsoft Office Word 2007 and then restarted your computer but you did not close all programs on your system especially Word 2007 which is currently running at that time or the windows update automatically restarted the system while these applications were running.

Microsoft has given a solution to this problem and here are the steps to solve the problem:

1. Exit all programs.

2. Click Start  , type Regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

 If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password and click Continue.

3. Locate and click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0WordData

4. On the Edit menu, Click Delete and then click Yes.

5. Exit Registry Editor.

6. Restart Word.
